Dog Obedience Training
The Well-Behaved Dog Results from Training
Have you considered dog obedience training? With the right attitude and patience, its simple, effective and much fun to do. This is the simple answer, to your frustration with a disobedient dog. Do you see other dogs not jumping on visiting friends? Do you see other dogs not running away in the park but always returning to their owners? Dog obedience training is the simple answer, if you haven't tried it.
With the right attention, dedication and patience, dog obedience training can be achieved in a matter of weeks. You want to show your dog off for the perfect dog that he is, you don't want him running amok in the street when you take him out, right? The basics of dog obedience training will be extremely beneficial to you and your dog. Especially later in your dogs life. Teaching your dog to sit, stay and come, are the basic commands a dog learns first. Very effective and worthwhile!
Dogs need to be taught right and wrong. Just like children, except that they have a lot of fur, to an extent they are kind of alike. If it turns out that you can't train your dog by yourself, the availability of obedience classes is widespread.
"Dog's are man's best friend!" You want a bond and a happy relationship with your dog friend? So what you don't want, is a dog that is afraid of you. Shouting at your dog will unfortunately cause that result. The trump card for obedience is to award them with a treat. A great method for dog obedience training! Only, when they have done something you asked, and no treat if the don't respond obediently.
Distractions must be limited, when teaching your dog obedience. Choose an empty park or grounds. Away from his toys and people. So that it can only be you and your dog. This isolation is preferable during your obedience training. Be firm but nice, when you tell your dog what to do. When you want him to sit, place your hand on his back and guide his bottom down, gently. Say sit, when his bottom is down. Then praise your dog and reward him with a treat. Repetition is the only way to make your dog realize that when you say sit you mean for him to sit. Soon enough treats will no longer be necessary, though praise is always recommended.
You'll probably need someone to help you with the "getting him to stay" teaching. That is another matter! Let the other person hold your dog after you make him sit (as taught). Firmly tell him to stay, then walk away. (With this teaching you may also use your hand as a firm signal by lifting your hand. Your dog will associate your hand signal with stay. He will realize that you want him to stay, not just when you tell him but also when you use your hand.) After walking away, give it a few seconds. Arrange with the other person when to release him. Only on your call: "Come (with his name)", and your hand signal he is to come to you. When he reaches you, make him sit and reward him. Always! With this technique you simultaneously teach your dog stay and come.
Though a dog can be taught at any age, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!", the saying goes. So the sooner after it is born, the easier it is to mould and to shape. Do it while they are still like soft clay!
